John Herr, CEO

John Herr, Ph.D., Dr. Herr is the founder of ContraVac and the inventor of the sperm antigen and monoclonal antibodies to be used in the Company's products. He is currently Professor of Cell Biology and Professor of Urology at the University of Virginia, where he also serves as the Director of the Lymphocyte Culture Center, a facility for the production of monoclonal antibodies, and Director of the Center for Research in Contraceptive and Reproductive Health. Dr. Herr has published more than 150 scientific articles and book chapters, has filed or been awarded 35 patents and during 1993-94 was President of the American Society for Reproductive Immunology. Dr. Herr holds a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He has worked in the field of reproductive biology since 1970.

Ed Leary, President/CEO

Edward J. Leary, President and Chief Financial Officer, joined ContraVac in January 2003. Prior to ContraVac, Mr. Leary was Chief Financial Officer for Hemoxymed, Inc., a publicly traded development stage therapeutics company, from start-up in 1998 to acquisition by Applied NeuroSolutions, Inc. in 2002. Prior to Hemoxymed, he was Controller of Visio Corporation, a developer of business drawing and diagramming software from 1993 to 1998 where he was a key member of management responsible for Visio Corporation’s initial public offering in 1995. Prior to Visio Corporation, he was CFO of Medical Innovations Corporation, a developer of enteral feeding kits, from start-up in 1984 through the sale of the company to Ballard Medical Products in 1993.

 

Michael Coppola, Ph.D., Director of Research and Development holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He was a post-doctoral fellow at Dartmouth Medical School and at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He is an Instructor of Research in Cell Biology at the University of Virginia. Dr. Coppola is the Principal Investigator on a Phase II SBIR grant awarded to ContraVac. He has published 16 papers and is an inventor on two patent applications.

Kenneth Klotz

Kenneth Klotz, Director, SpermCheck Product Development; holds a Masters degree from the University of Virginia. He is currently a Research Specialist at the University of Virginia. Mr. Klotz first demonstrated the feasibility of using a sandwich assay for SP-10 to measure sperm concentration and has been engaged in research and co-authored 9 articles on the SP-10 protein and monoclonal antibodies to this protein since 1987. Mr. Klotz has been the liaison with PBM Corporation throughout the development of the SpermCheck products.

Stuart S. Howards, M.D. Dr. Howards is Professor of Urology and Professor of Physiology at the University of Virginia. He is an internationally recognized urologist and has authored more than 125 scientific articles, book chapters and texts, including "Infertility in the Male", a widely used textbook. Dr. Howards recently served as President of the American Board of Urology and currently serves as Executive Secretary of this group, which is responsible for the board certification of all U.S. urologists. He received his M.D. from Columbia University and has been a practicing urologist since 1968.

Fred Hutchingson

Fred D. Hutchison., Esq., is a senior partner with the law firm of Hutchison & Mason PLLC, which was founded in 1996. His practice is focused on venture capital, securities and merger and acquisitions. His law firm concentrates on working with technology companies. Fred has worked with some of the Triangle’s hottest technology companies, including Integrated Silicon Systems, Trimeris, SciQuest, Ganymede, Accipiter, OpenSite Technologies and Icagen. Fred has also been a very active angel investor within the Triangle over the last 15 years and was instrumental in the enactment and subsequent renewals of the Qualified Business Venture Tax Credit for investors within North Carolina. Fred was the founding president of the Council for Entrepreneurial Development, the largest entrepreneurial support organization in the country. He has also served in the past as the Chairman of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, the Chairman of the Business Innovation Technology Advancement Center and the Chairman of The Sports Council. He is currently serving as the Chairman of the Triangle Community Foundation. Fred’s community and legal services have been recognized by awards from the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, the Council for Entrepreneurial Development and the North Carolina Electronics and Information Technology Association. He was recognized by Electronic Business in 1990 as one of the top 10 technology lawyers in the country. Fred earned a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1971 and his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1975.

David Patterson

David B. Patteson. Mr. Patteson is currently President and CEO of Advion Biosciences, Inc., a premier bioanalytical contract research organization and supplier of systems and consumables for the life science industry. Prior to Advion, Mr. Patteson was President of the Discovery Chemistry Group and member of the Executive Committee of Biotage AB, a global leader in research systems and consumables for the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industry, based in Uppsala, Sweden. He holds degrees from the University of Richmond and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He also completed a two-year multinational executive program in International Management conducted by the Institute of Management Development (“IMD”) in Switzerland 1992. In addition to board service for ContraVac, Mr. Patteson currently serves on the Board of Directors for Advion Biosciences, the Board of Scientific Advisors for The University of Richmond, is a member of the University of Richmond President’s Council, a member of the University of Virginia Board of Corporate Biotechnology Advisors, and member of the UVA Coulter Foundation Translational Research Board.

Ray Lopez, VP

Ray Lopez, M.B.A., Shamrock Corporation. Founder and managing partner of Shamrock Capital Partners (SCP). SCP is a closely help private equity buyout group that acquires, manages and builds companies. SCP provides capital for management buyouts, owner recapitilizations and industry consolidations. SCP partners with experienced management groups with strong track records and are industry experts. Prior to starting SCP, Mr. Lopez was Vice President of Shamrock Corporation. He was responsible for strategic planning and acquisitions. In 1996, Mr. Lopez started Innovative Learning Products, Inc. He sold this company in 1999. From 1989 - 1996, Mr. Lopez gained valuable corporate finance and banking experience working at Southwest Harvard Group and Texas Commerce Bank. Mr. Lopez holds a BBA degree in finance from the University of Notre Dame and a MBA from Arizona State University.
